ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) a' La Angels right-hander Jered Weaver is likely to be out for at the least monthly following the expert broke a in his left shoulder, casting a pall within the team's home operator Tuesday before it even started. The Angels place Weaver on the 15-day disabled list, and the sturdy 20-game winner's non-throwing arm was in a blue sling while his teammates took batting practice before their Angel Stadium opener against Oakland. "This is all new to me," Weaver said. "I haven't broken something before, and didn't really understand how to take the headlines. It kind of was a surprise initially, and so you have just got to play the waiting game, I guess." Weaver left Sunday night's loss to the Texas Rangers early after blocking his non-throwing arm while dodging a line drive back again to the pile. The Angels initially thought Weaver had only blocked his shoulder, but Weaver thought irregular pain after the game, and a fracture was unexpectedly revealed by an MRI exam on Monday expected to sideline him four to six weeks. "It is very disappointing, but I guess you've surely got to look on the bright aspect sometimes," Weaver said. "It is much better earlier in the day (in the season) than towards the finish, but at the same time, it is very annoying and disappointing." Weaver's injury has sent the big-budget Angels scrambling after their 2-4 street start to a season of high expectations. Director Mike Scioscia promoted hard-throwing right-hander Garrett Richards from the bullpen to replace Weaver in the rotation, and the Angels named up right-hander Dane De La Rosa, who only joined Los Angeles in a business with Tampa Bay last month. "It is extremely difficult to reduce your expert, and Jered has been that for quite a while here," Angels standard supervisor Jerry Dipoto said. "He is just a essential player for all of us. I feel like in some manner the silver lining is it was his left arm, and there is more of a short term description to the injury than long-term. It is much less if we just found out he was out for the season or something along these lines. It is his left arm, and that's the positive here." But Dipoto did not sugar-coat the negatives, either. Weaver is a huge mainstay in the Angels' rotation for the past seven months, starting at least 28 games in each of the past six activities while winning 102 games in his major league job, all with L A. "I had no feeling it may be this bad," Dipoto said. "The results of the X-ray (in Texas) were negative for an obvious crack. Unfortuitously, the MRI didn't tell the same story." Weaver had his first 20-win period with a 2.81 ERA this past year, tossing a no-hitter against Minnesota as you go along. He went 67-33 within the last four years, creating 130 starts and establishing herself together of baseball's top beginners and the Angels' expert after John Lackey left for Boston this season. Weaver has been an innings-eating beginner throughout his career, but incidents were a huge reason he finished third in the AL Cy Young voting a year ago despite tying winner David Price's 20 wins. Weaver missed three months last year with lower-back pain starting in-may, and he also missed a come from September to rest tendinitis in his right shoulder. "Hopefully we can keep him active and anticipate his recovery," Dipoto said. "I know he described 4-6 weeks. He is going to do what he could to ensure it is closer to the four (days), but we are not going to press him. We are attempting to win a tournament here." Weaver was not prominent in his first two starts in 2013, going 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA. La dropped two of three in each of its first two series against Cincinnati and Texas. Richards has started 12 activities in the last 2 yrs for the Angels while pitching mostly out from the bullpen, but this season he enjoyed a superb spring training. He'd no area in the rotation with returnees Weaver and C.J. Wilson backed by newcomers Tommy Hanson, Joe Blanton and Jason Vargas, but Weaver's damage may allow him to show he's ready for a normal major-league starting function. Richards is likely to get his begin of the summer season Saturday against Houston. "Garrett is coming off a terrific spring, and he's throwing the ball acutely well," Dipoto said. "I don't understand that anyone earned the opportunity significantly more than Garrett, and hopefully he can take the opportunity and work with it." Before the Angels needed him de La Rosa was received in a trade last month from Tampa Bay for right-hander Steven Geltz, and was ticketed for Triple-A Salt Lake.
