One of the top shooting guards set to enter the 2013 NBA draft, Victor Oladipo opted not to participate at the 2013 NBA Draft Scouting Combine in Chicago on Thursday, according to Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Rabjohns:
The former Indiana star was able to have his height measured, however, reportedly coming in just over 6'4", meaning he'll be an undersized 2-guard at the next level (via CBSSports.com's Jeff Goodman):
Most NBA draft scouts consider the 21-year-old guard to be a Top 10 selection in this June's draft, so it's hard to blame Oladipo for sitting out at the advice of his agent.
A National Player of the Year candidate last season for the top-ranked Hoosiers, Oladipo averaged 13.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.2 steals per game while shooting 60 percent from the field and 44 percent from beyond the arc.
Oladipo's spectacular play on both ends of the floor last year has earned him comparisons to Miami Heat superstar Dwyane Wade and the Houston Rockets' James Harden.
While there are question marks about Oladipo's size and ability on the offensive end, there's no denying his athleticism and ability to lock down opponents on the defensive end of the floor. A physical, tough-minded guard, the Upper Marlboro, Md., native also boasts an unrivaled motor.
Oladipo has nothing left to prove to NBA scouts and general managers. He's improved every season since his freshman year at Indiana and, quite frankly, the tape speaks for itself.
Where Oladipo lands this summer will depend on how the NBA draft lottery shapes out on Tuesday night, but assuming the percentages hold up, look for Oladipo to wind up going somewhere around No. 5 overall.
Some experts, including ESPN's Chad Ford (membership required) currently have Oladipo going No. 4 overall to the Phoenix Suns.
Phoenix would likely love to get its hands on Oladipo with its lottery pick this summer. After all, the Suns lack an elite perimeter defender and ranked 26th in the NBA last season in points allowed (101.6 per game).
Given Oladipo's versatility and ability to excel on both ends of the court, it wouldn't be at all surprising to see him go somewhere in the Top Five this June.
While many will be disappointed that Oladipo didn't suit up for the workouts at the combine, others will say he was smart to sit out and maintain his high draft stock heading into the summer.
