The University of Minnesota has reportedly shot menas hockey coach Tubby Smith after six times with the staff, according to Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports. Jones went 124-81 during his time with the Golden Gophers, but led the group to a subpar 46-62 report from the Big Ten and only reached the NCAA tournament three of his six months (two first-round losses in '09 and 2010 and a third-round loss this season). It absolutely was that annual punishment from the Big Ten rivals and many Minnesota fans that were caused by the lack of NCAA tournament success to demand changes on the coaching team (h/t Sid Hartman of the Minnesota Star Tribune). Whether it was the best choice money for hard times of this program or not, Golden Gopher country has brought the change it wanted. Johnson was employed in 2007 after whilst the head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats spending the past decade. The 61-year-old coach won the national championship in 1998 after overpowering for legendary school coach Rick Pitino, but never managed to repeat his feat. The allure of choosing Smith and his national name produced high expectations to the Golden Gophers system, but still another early loss in the competition this season (a beatdown from the Florida Gators in the round of 32) has caused the university to create the shift it feels is most beneficial for the menas basketball team. The major problem now will be which coach the school tries to hire now that the head coaching job is vacant. Goodman claims that Minnesota will try to provoke VCU head coach Shaka Wise to the group. From the actions of the Golden Gophersa athletic section, the school is serious about creating a real effect in college basketball moving forward. That meant moving on from Smith first, though.
